[사적 제382호 여주 고달사지]

고달사는 신라 경덕왕 23년(764)에 처음 세워진 후, 고려 광종 이후 역대 왕들의 보호를 받아 큰 절로 성장하였다. 고달사에는 석조 문화재들이 많이 남아 있는데, 모두 고달이라는 석공이 만들었다고 전한다. 고달은 가족들이 굶어 죽는 줄도 모르고 절을 이루는 데에 혼을 바쳤다고 하는데, 절을 다 이루고 나서는 스스로 머리를 깎고 스님이 되었으며, 훗날 도를 이루어 큰스님이 되니, 고달사라 불렀다는 전설이 있다.

절터 안에는 깔끔한 모양과 세련된 조각수법의 고달사지 부도(국보 제4호)를 비롯하여 훌륭한 문화재들이 많이 남아 있다. 고달사 원종대사 혜진탑비 귀부와 이수(보물 제6호)는 원종대사의 행적에 대한 내용을 담고 있는 탑비로 975년에 만들었는데, 통일신라 말에서 고려시대 초기로 넘어가는 탑비 형식을 잘 보여주고 있다. 고달사 원종대사 혜진탑(보물 제7호)은 원종대사의 묘탑으로 아름답고 화려한 조각이 있어 고려시대 부도의 조각 수법이 잘 나타나 있다. 그밖에 고달사지 석불좌(보물 제8호)와 지금은 국립중앙박물관으로 옮긴 고달사지 쌍사자석등(보물 제282호)이 있다.

최근에 발굴조사를 통해 금당터를 비롯한 건물터를 확인하고, 절터의 규모를 어느 정도 짐작할 수 있게 되었다. 

[영문 설명]

As a historic Buddhist temple site, Godalsa Temple was built in 764, the 23rd year of the reign of King Gyeongdeok of the Silla Dynasty. Godalsa Temple had been a very prosperous and large Buddhist temple under the protection of many kings succeeding King Gwangjong during the Goryeo Dynasty. There is no record as to when and why it was closed, however. Quite a few cultural properties have been found at the site. Among them, the Stupa at the Godalsa Temple Site (National Treasure No. 4), a round stone Buddhist pagoda where the bones of a renowned Buddhist monk were placed, boasts of refined shape and engraving. The tortoise-shaped pedestal and ornamental capstone of the Stele for Buddhist Monk Wonjong, a stone monument built to honor highly learned Buddhist Monk Wonjong, were found at the Godalsa Temple Site (Treasure No. 6). It was erected in 975, clearly showing the stylistic change of the Buddhist pagodas and monuments from the late Silla Dynasty to the early Goryeo Dynasty. The Stupa of Buddhist Monk Wonjong at the Godalsa Temple Site (Treasure No.7) shows the engraving skills of stupa in the Goryeo Period with its refined shape. The Stone Pedestal at the Godalsa Temple Site (Treasure No. 8) and Twin Lion Stone Lantern from the Godalsa Temple Site (Treasure No. 282) were also found at the site. The stone lantern was later moved to the National Museum of Korea.

"대한민국 으뜸 고려시대 승탑"

[국보 제4호 여주 고달사지 승탑]

고달사터에 남아 있는 고려시대의 승탑이다. 고달사는 통일신라시대 경덕왕 23년(764)에 창건된 절로, 고려 광종 이후에는 왕들의 보호를 받아 큰 사찰로서의 면모를 유지하기도 하였으나, 언제 문을 닫게 되었는지는 분명하지 않다. 

이 승탑은 바닥의 형태가 8각을 이루고 있으며, 꼭대기의 머리장식이 완전하지 않은 것을 제외하면 대부분 잘 남아 있다. 전체의 무게를 지탱하고 있는 기단(基壇)은 상·중·하 세 부분으로 갖추어져 있는데, 특히 가운데돌에 새겨진 조각들이 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온다. 가운데 돌은 8각이라기보다는 거의 원을 이루고 있으며, 표면에 새겨진 두 마리의 거북은 입체적으로 표현되어 사실감이 느껴진다. 각 거북을 사이에 두고 네 마리의 용을 새겨 두었으며, 나머지 공간에는 구름무늬로 가득 채웠다. 돌에 꽉 차게 새겨진 무늬들이 과장되지 않고 세련되어 능숙하면서도 대담한 힘이 느껴진다. 가운데 돌을 중심으로 그 아래와 윗돌에는 연꽃무늬를 두어 우아함을 살리고 있다.

사리를 모셔둔 탑몸돌에는 문짝 모양과 사천왕상(四天王像)이 새겨져 있는데, 문에 새겨진 자물쇠 모양의 조각은 밋밋하여 형식적으로 흐른 감이 있다. 이를 덮고 있는 지붕돌은 꽤 두꺼운 편으로, 각 모서리를 따라 아래로 미끄러지면 그 끝마다 큼직한 꽃 조각이 달려 있는데, 크기에 비해 조각이 얕아서 장식 효과는 떨어진다. 지붕돌 꼭대기에는 둥그런 돌 위로 지붕을 축소한 듯한 보개(寶蓋)가 얹혀 있다.

전체적으로 신라의 기본형을 잘 따르면서도 각 부분의 조각들에서 고려 특유의 기법을 풍기고 있어 고려시대 전기인 10세기 즈음에 세워졌을 것으로 보인다. 돌을 다듬은 솜씨도 깨끗하고 조각에서도 세련미가 묻어나오는 작품이다. 

[영문 설명]

This stupa of the Goryeo Period (918~1392) had originally been located at the precincts of Godalsa, a Buddhist temple established in 764 when Unified Silla was under the rule of King Gyeongdeok. The temple enjoyed great prosperity during the early Goryeo since it was protected by its rulers after King Gwangjong (925-975), eventually disappearing although no record remains to inform us when.  
The stupa, marked by an octagonal base, has preserved its original condition comparatively well although the finial lacks perfection. The base consists of three tiers whose middle tier is adorned with an impressive array of elaborate carvings. It is more circular than octagonal, with the surface carved with two tortoises and four dragons surrounded by auspicious clouds all expressed in a realistic manner. All the carvings of the middle tier exhibit fine artistic skills and overflowing energy, whereas those around the upper and lower tiers feature elegant lotus designs.
The main body of the stupa where the Artifact of an eminent monk are enshrined is carved with the Four Heavenly Kings and a pair of doors closed with a padlock. The carving of the doors is rather plain and much stylized, whereas the roofstone is significantly thick with large -- but coarsely carved -- floral decorations on each corner. Above the roofstone is a bejeweled canopy (bogae) in the shape of a roof supported by a spherical stone.
The style of this stone stupa is characterized by the use of unique carving techniques developed by Goryeo artisans probably during the 10th century, with its basic elements clearly reflecting the principles formed during the Unified Silla period. The carving techniques and the artistic details of the carved decorations clearly show that it is a work produced by one or more master artisans of Goryeo.

"여주 고달사지 승탑"


고달사지 승탑 자대석과 중대석(지대석은 중심에 놓인 팔각 대석과 이를 둘러싸고 있는 여러 매의 판석으로 짜여 있다. 지대석 위로는 두툼한 돌로 굄대를 놓아 다소 높다는 느낌을 준다. 아래 부분은 안상을 음각으로 새겼는데, 그 중심에 귀꽃 모양의 안상을 한 면에 한 구씩 꾸민 것이 이채롭다. 상단에는 연꽃을 복련으로 둘러 피게 해 시원하면서도 안정감이 있다.

중대석의 둥근 몸돌에는 거북을 중심에 두고 네 마리의 용이 구름 속에서 노닐고 있다. 정면을 향하고 있는 거북 머리는 형식화된 면을 보이고는 있지만, 주변에 정교한 솜씨로 다듬은 용머리와 힘이 넘치는 그들의 몸짓은 매우 역동적이어서 사실감을 주며 웅장하기까지 하다. 큼직한 연꽃이 앙련으로 돌려진 받침 위에 팔각 상대석을 놓고 몸돌을 안치하였다. 출처:한국문화유산답사회)


고달사지 승탑 몸돌과 지붕돌(팔각 몸돌에는 정면과 후면에 자물통이 달린 문짝과 창살문, 사천왕이 번갈아 조각되어 있다. 자물통은 그 안에 스님의 사리와 경전 등(法藏)이 들어 있으니 열쇠로 잠가 보호한다는 의미이고, 사천왕은 그 법장을 지키는 신이다. 눈매가 서글서글하고 몸매의 균형이 잘 잡힌 사천왕상이 돋보인다. 

두툼한 지붕돌이 자칫 투박해 보일 수도 있겠으나, 여덟 귀의 전각을 날렵하게 들어 올린 큼직한 귀꽃이 이를 상쇄하고도 남는다. 성한 귀꽃이 서너 개뿐이어서 안타깝다. 지붕돌 낙수면엔 합각선이 뚜렷할 뿐 다른 표현은 생략되었다. 지붕돌 처마 밑에 새겨진 비천상이 그지없이 예쁘다. 

부도의 주인은 지금 천상의 세계에 머물고 있음을 상징하고 있음이다. 눈여겨볼 만하다. 지붕돌 정상면에 이르러 복련을 두르고 상륜부를 받치도록 하였으나, 현재 상륜부는 남아 있지 않고 지붕돌을 축소해놓은 것 같은 보개만 남아 있다. 그 위에 찰주를 꽂기 위한 원공이 있는 것으로 보아 상륜부는 매우 화려했을 것으로 짐작할 뿐이다. - 출처:한국문화유산답사회)
