단양 온달동굴&먹거리

"물, 시간이 빚어낸 자연의 걸작"

[천연기념물 제261호 단양 온달동굴 (丹陽 溫達洞窟)]

온달동굴은 옛날 온달 장군이 성을 쌓았다는 온달산성의 밑에 있기 때문에 붙여진 이름으로 동굴의 총길이는 700m이며, 연한 회색의 석회암으로 이루어져 있다.

온달동굴의 출입구는 해발 약 160m이며 남한강 수면으로부터는 약 10m로 홍수기에는 침수되기도 한다. 협곡형태의 동굴속에는 단층면이나 절리면을 따라 종유석, 석순, 석주 등의 동굴생성물들이 발달되어 있다. 신동국여지승람 제14권 충청북도 영춘현의 고적 조항에는 동굴 내부의 모습과 함께 '석굴'로 기록되어 있다. 온달 동굴은 지형경관이 아름답고, 지질학적 연구자료로서의 가치가 크다.

[영문 설명]

The name of Ondaldonggul Cave is derived from the legend of General Ondal built himself a fortress near this cave. This cave has length of 700m and consists of light grey limestone.

The entrance is at the side of Namhangang River and the waves of the river come in and out of the cave all the time, so there are few creatures here. The shape inside the cave is a bit simple because waves constantly chip off the walls. Moreover, the various creatures of the ground water can hardly be seen because the water flows from inside of the cave. Nonetheless, there are many stalagmites coming up from the floor of the cave. Ondaldonggul Cave is designated and conserved as a Natural Monument because of its beautiful scenery for sightseeing.
