미선나무는 우리나라에서만 자라는 희귀한 식물로 개나리와 같은 과에 속하는데, 개나리와 마찬가지로 이른 봄에 꽃이 잎보다 먼저 난다. 높이는 1∼1.5m 정도로 키가 작고, 가지 끝은 개나리와 비슷하게 땅으로 처져 있다. 미선나무는 열매의 모양이 부채를 닮아 꼬리 미(尾), 부채 선(扇)자를 써서 미선나무라 하는데, 하트모양과 비슷하다.

미선나무는 한때 많은 사람들이 함부로 꺾어 가지고 가서 일부 알려진 자생지에서는 완전히 사라진 경우도 있었다. 그러나 이곳은 미선나무 보존 위원회가 결성되고 서울대학교 관악수목원과 자연보존협회가 참가하여 미선나무를 되살리는 사업을 하고, 옮겨 심을 어린나무를 주변에 나누어줌으로써 많은 성과를 거두었다.

괴산의 미선나무는 산골짜기 작은 시내 옆의 경사진 야산에서 자라고 있다. 이 지역은 흙이 적고 곳곳에 큰 바위와 굵은 돌이 쌓여 있는데, 이는 미선나무가 다른 나무들과의 경쟁력이 약해서, 다른 나무들이 살지 않는 황폐한 곳에서 경쟁을 피해 살기 때문이다.

괴산의 미선나무 자생지는 우리나라에만 있는 매우 귀한 미선나무가 모여 자라고 있는 곳으로서, 그 희귀성과 식물 분류 및 분포학적 가치가 높이 평가되어 천연기념물로 지정·보호하고 있다.

[영문 설명]

The name “Miseonnamu” (white forsythias) means that its fruits are fan-shaped. The shape of the fruits also looks like a heart. As a rare species found only in Korea, this tree grows to about 1~1.5m, and the tips of its branches droop downward like the golden bell tree. White forsythias belongs to the same family as the golden bell tree; and its flowers bloom before the leaves come out. White forsythias in Goesan is growing in the small, slanting mountain and beside a small brook. This place has big rocks and gravel. Because of the damage done by many people, white forsythias became extinct. In this place, however, the preservation of white forsythias was successful with the efforts of the Miseonnamu Preservation Committee, Seoul National Univ. Gwanak Arboretum, and Nature Preservation Committee. Another reason for the success of the preservation movement is the distribution of young white forsythias to plant. Since the Natural Habitat of White Forsythias in Goesan is a place where white forsythias found only in Korea are growing, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.

The tree belongs to the same family as the golden bell tree; just like the golden bell tree, its flowers bloom before the leaves come out. The Natural Habitat of White Forsythia in Chujeom-ri, Goesan is in the small mountain beside a rice paddy. This place has big rocks and gravel. Here, there are almost no other big trees except white forsythias. This place has lots of white forsythias that it could be called a stock, but those trees are not growing thickly. Since the Natural Habitat of white forsythia in Chujeom-ri, Goesan is a place where these valuable trees that grow only in Korea thrive, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.

The Natural Habitat of White Forsythia in Goesan is located in the mid-slope of a mountain that is not far from Yulji-ri. Because the environment around the Natural Habitat of White Forsythia in Yulji-ri, Goesan is not good, only small trees are growing instead of big ones. As a place where the valuable trees that grow only in Korea thrive, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.

괴산 옛길맛집(괴산 산막이옛길 주차장 부근에 위치한다. 남사장님이 채취한 자연산 버섯찌개가 대표 음식이다. 찌개, 전, 백숙, 닭복음탕, 막걸리등도 판매한다.)

청국장찌개(버섯 채취하고 오신 남사장님과 늦은 점심을 함께했다. 식사 후 계산하려 하니 여사장님이 술값만 받으신다. 쌀밥, 청국장찌개, 찐 고구마, 콩나물무침, 배추김치, 호박 나물, 가지나물, 고추, 막장 등 직접 농사지은 식자재로 음식을 만든다. 소박한 시골 집밥 한 상이다.)

청국장찌개(머리와 내장을 손질한 큼직한 멸치, 뭉텅뭉텅 썬 호박, 두부, 파, 양파, 고춧가루, 청국장등을 넣어 끓였다. 연한 단맛의 구수하고 시원한 국물에 청국장 콩알이 진득하게 씹힌다.)
