[명승 제98호 설악산 십이선녀탕 일원]

밤이면 하늘에서 선녀가 내려와 목욕을 하고 갔다고 하여 ‘선녀탕’이라 전해지고 있으며, 예로부터 탕이 12개나 된다고 전하여 오고 있으나, 실제는 8탕이 있으며, 탕의 모양에 따라 응봉아래 응봉폭포를 지나 첫 탕인 독탕, 북탕, 무지개탕, 복숭아탕(용탕)이 나오는데 그 중 폭포아래 복숭아 모양의 깊은 구멍이 있는 7번째 복숭아탕이 백미다.

폭은 그다지 넓지 않지만 크고 작은 소와 폭포들이 이어지고 잣나무와 박달나무, 소나무 등 거목들이 우거져 절경을 이룬다.

가을에는 십이선녀탕 계곡의 최고의 경치를 느낄 수 있으며, 계곡 사이로 짙게 물든 단풍과 암벽이 옥빛의 계곡수와 조화를 이루며 내설악의 장관을 연출한다.

겨울에는 탕을 연결하는 폭포들이 흰 얼음기둥, 혹은 넓은 얼음벽으로 변해 또 하나의 겨울풍경이 아름답게 연출된다.

조선 정조 때 성해응(1760~1839)의 《동국명산기》에서도 “설악산의 여럿 명소 중 십이선녀탕 을 첫손으로 꼽았다”고 하며, 1960년 한찬석씨가 펴낸 《설악산탐승인도지》에서는 “설악산의 최고 명승지로서 십이선녀탕의 절경을 듣기 전에는 설악의 진수를 논하지 말라”고 기록하였다.

[영문 설명]

Sibiseonnyeotang literally means “twelve basins for heavenly maidens.” Many Korean legends say that heavenly maidens descended from heaven to these basins to take a bath at night. Actually, there are eight basins in this valley, each of which was named after its shape, for example, Doktang (Jar Basin), Buktang (Flying Shuttle Basin), Mujigaetang (Rainbow Basin), and Boksungatang (Peach Basin). Among them, Boksungatang is regarded as the best scenic site.

The valley is not very wide, but it forms a picturesque landscape with its many basins and waterfalls surrounded with pine nut trees, birches, and pine trees.

The valley’s scenic beauty reaches its peak during the autumn, displaying splendid red and yellow autumn leaves in harmony with the rocky cliffs and crystalline water of the valley.

In winter, the waterfalls are transformed into white pillars of ice and broad ice walls, creating a marvelous sight to see.

In the late 18th century, Seong Hae-eung, a civil official of the late Joseon Dynasty, wrote in his book titled Dongguk myeongsangi (Noted Mountains and Rivers in the Eastern State) that Sibiseonnyeotang is the best of the numerous attractions around Seoraksan Mountain.

황태구이(황금빛 황태에 매콤달콤한 양념을 발라 구워 파, 깨를 뿌려 돌판에 담아 내온다. 촉촉하고, 고소하다. 애호박, 무생채 등 밑반찬도 나온다. 옥수수 동동주 한잔을 곁들여 먹는다. 산행에 피로가 풀린다.)
