백로는 열대에서 온대에 이르는 지역에 널리 분포하며 우리나라에서는 백두산 지역을 제외한 전지역에서 번식한다. 하천·호수·간석지 등에서 볼 수 있으며 이른 봄부터 늦가을까지 우리나라에서 번식하는데, 주로 소나무·은행나무에서 집단 번식한다.

왜가리는 우리나라의 백로과 조류 중에서 제일 큰 새로서, 우리나라 전지역에 걸쳐 번식하는 여름새이다. 일부 적은 무리는 남쪽지방과 섬지방에서 텃새가 되어 겨울을 지낸다. 논·하천·해안·간석지에서 살며 개구리, 물고기, 뱀 등을 잡아 먹는다.

횡성 압곡리의 백로 및 왜가리 번식지는 마을 서쪽에 있는 영산과 북쪽의 압산에 있다. 영산의 정상에는 200∼300년 된 소나무를 중심으로 숲이 우거져 있으며, 압산에는 산등성이에 약 90년 된 소나무 1그루와 그 밖에 떡갈나무, 상수리나무가 있다. 약 20년 전까지는 대부분 왜가리 집단이 번식하였으나, 점차 왜가리는 감소되고 현재는 중대백로가 번식집단의 대부분을 차지하고 있다.

횡성 압곡리의 백로 및 왜가리 번식지는 우리나라의 대표적인 백로 및 왜가리 번식지 중의 하나이므로 천연기념물로 지정·보호하고 있다.

[영문 설명]

An egret lives widely in the tropical and temperate regions and in all areas in Korea except the highland in Baekdusan Mountain. It reproduces in Korea from early spring to late autumn, and it can be seen in streams, lakes, and tideland.

It reproduces mainly in a pine tree and a ginkgo tree. The grey heron is the biggest bird in the white heron family, reproducing in all areas in Korea in summer. A small group of herons spend winter in the southern region and island region. It lives in a rice field, a stream, a coast, and a tideland and feeds on frogs, fish, and snakes. The Breeding Ground of Egrets and Grey Herons in Apgok-ri is located in Yeongsan Mountain in the western part of the town and in Apsan Mountain in the northern part of the town. At the top of Yeongsan Mountain is a forest of 200~300-year-old pine trees; on the hillside of Apsan Mountain are 90-year-old pine trees and Quercus dentatas and Quercus acutissimas. About 20 years ago, groups of herons used to breed here, but they have decreased in number.

Today, mostly Egrets live here. Since this place has been damaged by people who visit here, this place is designated and protected as a natural monument.

한우내장탕(빨간 기름 살짝 머금은 기분 좋게 얼근하며 개운한 국물에 벌집양, 곱창 등 졸깃하고 고소한 한우 내장, 부추, 배추 등 건더기가 푸짐하게 담겨 나온다. 잡내 없이 잘 삶은 겉은 붉고 속은 진한 갈색의 퍽퍽하지 않은 부드럽고 진득한 소 선지를 한우내장탕에 넣어 먹는다.)
