[보물 갑사 동종]

갑사동종(甲寺銅鐘)은 조선 초기의 종으로 국왕의 만수무강을 축원하며, 갑사에 매달 목적으로 선조 17년(1584)에 만들어졌다.

​높이 131㎝, 입지름 91㎝로 전체적으로 어깨부터 중간까지 완만한 곡선을 이루고 있으며, 중간 지점부터 입 부분까지 직선으로 되어있다. 종 꼭대기에는 음통이 없고, 하나의 몸체로 이어져 서로 반대로 머리를 돌린 2마리 용이 고리를 이루고 있다.

​종의 어깨에는 물결모양으로 꽃무늬를 둘렀고, 바로 밑에는 위 아래로 나누어 위에는 연꽃무늬를, 아래에는 범자를 둥글게 돌아가며 촘촘히 새겼다. 그 아래 4곳에는 사각형의 연곽을 만들고, 그 안에는 가운데가 볼록한 연꽃모양의 연뢰(蓮蕾)를 9개씩 두었다. 종의 몸통 4곳에는 종을 치는 부분인 당좌를 따로 두었고, 그 사이에는 구름위에 석장을 들고 있는 지장보살이 서 있다. 종 입구 부분에서 조금 위로 올라와 덩굴무늬 띠를 둘렀다.

​이 종은 일제시대 때 헌납이라는 명목으로 공출되었다가, 광복 후 갑사로 옮겨온 민족과 수난을 같이 한 종이다.

[영문 설명]

Located at Gapsa Temple, this bronze bell was made in 1584, the 17th year of the reign of King Seonjong of the early Joseon Dynasty, in order to pray for the long life of the king.

The bell is 131 cm tall with a diameter of 91 cm at the mouth. Overall, it is curved gently from the shoulder to the middle, and then goes straight down to the mouth. A sculpture of two dragons forms a loop at the top without any resonance chamber.

The shoulder of the bell is carved in relief with flower patterns in the shape of a wave. below these are engraved lotus flower patterns and Sanskrit letters. Next, there are designs of squares inside which are carved nine lotus flowers with protruding centers. On the body, there are four spots of dangjwa where a wooden ram struck on the bell. Between the dangjwa are designs of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva holding a cane and standing on clouds. The mouth of the bell is rimmed with vined patterns.

Under Japanese imperial rule, this bell was starved of donations, and then, after Korean independence, was moved to Gapsa Temple. This shows that the bell as well as the Korean people went through hard times.

​보물 갑사 동종(대웅전에서 보아 왼쪽으로 해탈문 바로 옆에 동종각이 있어 보물 제478호인 동종을 걸어 두었다. 몸체에 선조 17년(1584)에 만들었다는 글자가 새겨져 있어 동종만은 다행히 병화를 면했음을 알 수 있는데, 명문에 따르면 당시 이 절의 이름은 갑사사(岬士寺)였다고 한다.

종 위쪽에 용 두 마리가 종의 고리를 이루고 있는데 우리나라 종(신라종)의 특색인 음통이 없어 조선 시대 종의 면모를 보인다. 어깨 부분에는 물결 모양의 꽃무늬가, 바로 아래에는 연꽃무늬가, 그 아래에는 고대 인도말인 범자가 새겨져 있다.

유곽 네 곳에는 외곽에 당초문을 두르고 안쪽에 9개씩의 연화유두도 새겼다. 종을 치는 당좌에는 연꽃무늬가 새겨져 있고 당좌 사이에 늘씬한 지장보살입상이 서 있다. 종의 전체높이는 127㎝이며 입지름은 91.5㎝이다. - 출처:한국문화유산답사회)
